Her unique approach to medicine combines both science informed conventional medicine and alternative wisdom. Her education in Naturopathic Medicine has helped her understand the power of the gentle and effective methods that bring the body into a healthy balance.

When she’s not helping her patients achieve their health and wellness goals, Dr. Caitlin Fanning, ND is spending time with her two babies. She enjoys visiting the north coast, smelling the ocean air, and being immersed in nature. She also loves cooking locally grown foods and spends her free time learning ukelele, reading, practicing yoga, gardening, hiking, and rejuvenating with hydrotherapy rounds at the spa.

Naturopathic Medicine uses a natural and holistic approach to health and medicine. Through individualistic, patient-centered care, we focus on finding the root cause of disease, rather than just treating symptoms.

A Naturopathic Doctor is a highly trained, licensed expert on how to combine alternative and conventional approaches.

Naturopathic Doctors complete a 4-5 year, full-time, doctoral-level, scientific medical program at an accredited school and are awarded a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine (ND or an NMD). In addition to standard medical curriculum, Naturopathic Doctors receive extensive training in natural specialties like herbal medicine, clinical nutrition, homeopathy, and counseling. Optimizing patient vitality and prevention of disease is at the core of the teachings. National Board Exams and a degree from an accredited medical school is required for professional licensure by individual states.

More About Naturopathic Training:

  • Pre-medical undergraduate courses in physiology, biology, chemistry, physiology are required for entry into naturopathic medical school.

  • The first few years of naturopathic medical school is similar to those of doctor of medicine (MD) and doctor of osteopathy (DO) programs, with comparable training hours in the basic medical sciences: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and immunology, pathology, pharmacology, and differential diagnosis.

  • In addition to traditional medical training, considerable time is spent on courses in nutrition, botanical medicine (including extensive training in herb-drug-nutrient interactions), physical medicine (massage and spinal manipulation techniques), hydrotherapy, homeopathy, and counseling.

  • Passing two rounds of standardized professional board exams is required before physician licensure. Each jurisdiction licensing NDs has structured laws governing the scope of practice, including time spent in continuing education yearly.

  • Many naturopathic doctors choose to specialize in areas such as Endocrinology, Environmental Medicine, Gastroenterology, Pediatrics, Primary Care, Psychiatry, and Oncology, although all Naturopathic Doctors have comprehensive Family Medicine/General Medicine training.
